Anne Hathaway Honors “Devil Wears Prada” With A Thoughtful Remark

Anne Hathaway marked the 16th anniversary of her movie Devil Wears Prada by sharing a political message about women’s reproductive rights, following the overturn of Roe v. Wade.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to reverse the ruling that since 1973 has given women in the US a constitutional right to abortions, the 39-year-old actor subtly addressed her dismay at the news.

Hathaway shared a series of photos from the iconic career-focused movie that co-starred Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt, which she captioned: ‘Looking back on photos of this beloved film that shaped the lives and careers of so many—mine included—I am struck by the fact that the young female characters in this movie built their lives and careers in a country that honoured their right to have choice over their own reproductive health [sic].’

The mother-of-two affirmed her dismay at the latest ruling when adding: ‘See you in the fight.’

Hathaway shares sons Jonathan, six and Jack, two, with husband-of-ten-years Adam Shulman.

The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade advocates Mississippi’s ban on abortions after 15 weeks and means half of the states in the US could introduce new restrictions or bans.

Such a decision coincides with the court’s previous 1992 ruling in Planned Parenthood v Casey, which meant carrying out an abortion was subject to medical reasons.

As a result, some states have already enforced restrictive measures.

These include forcing young women to factor their parents or a judge into their decision to have an abortion.

Besides Hathaway, others to speak out on the overturning of Roe v. Wade include Michelle Obama.

The former First Lady released a statement expressing how ‘heartbroken’ she was at the news that ‘people around this country have just lost the fundamental right to make informed decisions about their own bodies’.

Meghan Markle also condemned the Supreme Court’s decision, telling Vogue: ‘Nobody should be forced to make a decision they do not want to make or is unsafe, or puts their own life in jeopardy.’

The 40-year-old duchess warned: ‘Women with resources will travel to get an abortion, those without might attempt to give themselves one at tremendous risk.

‘Some will have to source abortion pills from unregulated pharmacies.’

Addressing her husband Prince Harry’s positioning on the issue too, she said: ‘His reaction last week was guttural, like mine.

‘I know that for so many women right now, there is a sentiment of despair.’

During her monologue at the 2022 BET Awards on Sunday, June 26, Empire star Taraji P. Henson said: ‘It’s a sad day in America. A weapon that can take lives has more power than a woman who can give life if she chooses to. It’s about time I got that off my chest.’
