Elon Musk, the richest person in the world according to Forbes, lives in a rented house worth $50,000. This billionaire sold most of his valuable assets and poured money into unusual passions.

Since his rise to fame, Elon Musk has made it clear that his personal mission is to explore Mars and he created SpaceX to accomplish that goal. The billionaire believes humans need a backup plan if Earth becomes unlivable and announced in 2021 that he wants to invest most of his fortune in the project.

According to Insider, Musk said that building a city on Mars would require “a lot of capital” and that he wanted to “be able to contribute as much as possible.” To show his seriousness about investing his assets “for the good of humanity,” Elon Musk said he is staying away from material possessions, including his impressive property portfolio.

In 2012, Elon Musk made headlines when he spent $17 million to buy a 20,248 square meter villa in Bel Air, California. According to the Los Angeles Times, the house has a two-story library, office, wine cellar, tennis court, 7 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. At that time, Elon Musk spent millions of dollars investing in at least five other nearby properties.

However, in May 2020, he vowed to “not own a house” to avoid being seen as materialistic by critics, and to demonstrate his dedication to the company. According to Sky News, the billionaire then sold his 7 houses in California for a total of 128 million USD. Musk’s main home is currently a $50,000/month rental house in Boca Chica, Texas.

It’s no surprise that the Tesla and SpaceX boss is interested in unusual cars. According to Insider, Musk bought the Lotus Esprit submarine car in 2013. This car is famous for appearing in the James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me. Elon Musk paid $920,000 for the car at an auction.

According to NBC News, the vehicle is in fact a working submarine, but is believed to be capable of filling with water inside, forcing the pilot to breathe using an oxygen tank. However, in the film, Roger Moore, who plays Bond, remains completely dry. Musk said in a statement that he was disappointed that the car could not truly transform. “What I’m going to do is upgrade it with a Tesla electric car and try to make it happen,” he said.

The billionaire may have given up his luxury homes, but when it comes to travel, Elon Musk never boards commercial planes. Instead, he owns an impressive Gulfstream G650ER small plane worth an estimated $70 million. According to Insider, the G650 is one of the fastest, largest and longest-range private aircraft in the world.

It wasn’t just the submarine that attracted this billionaire’s attention. Elon Musk clearly has an interest in rare and unusual cars. According to Insider, over the years, the billionaire has owned a 1920 Ford Model T, a 1967 Series 1 Jaguar E-Type and a McLaren F1 that sold for an impressive new price of $1 million.

Musk also famously designed his own Tesla Roadster 2o10 to go to space as part of SpaceX’s February 2018 Falcon Heavy test flight.

It’s no secret that Elon Musk used to lead an unhealthy lifestyle. This workaholic admitted to working 100-120 hours a week and relying heavily on caffeine to stay active. According to Insider, Elon Musk used to drink at least 8 cans of Coke Light a day and several large cups of coffee.

Never without his favorite drink, Elon Musk continues to pay for his Coke habit but has at least switched to the caffeine-free version. In a social media post in 2022, the SpaceX boss shared an image of his bedside table containing four cans of caffeine-free Diet Coke, among other miscellaneous items.
