“How is this re-edited shot better than a $200M+ movie?”: DC Fans Claim The Flash VFX Can Never Live Up to Zack Snyder’s Justice League

The bad press surrounding The Flash doesn’t seem to be abating now that the movie has finally opened in theatres. Notably, the CGI of the film has drawn the attention of both fans and critics, and some viewers find it unsettling.

The Flash

Zach Mulligan, also known as no_the_robot on TikTok and YouTube, went into detail about his experience working on “The Flash” as well as the sad tendency of CGI-heavy superhero movies. Following criticism of the looks of the CGI in The Flash, he used TikTok to speak directly to fans about his experience working on the movie and the demanding circumstances he and his coworkers were put in.

The VFX team was extremely overworked on The Flash

The intense workload for VFX artists reflects the competitive corporate mentality of major studios, as Zach Mulligan discussed in his TikTok video. He added that the movie in question prompted him to ask his coworkers for extra time, which ultimately led to his resignation from the job after only three months. This “in a frenzy” approach usually results in a number of preventable and embarrassing CGI moments, which is harmful to both the workers and the finished product of the film.

“[The] only thing they care about is pleasing their shareholders on the next earnings call, To them: they’ve managed to increase the output of superhero movies that are still making billions of dollars, and they’ve reduced the time it takes to make them. Studios could easily space out their projects to give these super-talented and hard-working artists more time to work on the film. But that’s just not in the best interest of the shareholders.”

Mulligan cited Avatar: The Way of Water as an example of what quality CGI work looks like, noting that it took a decade to complete. That isn’t the case, though, with the majority of blockbusters, like The Flash. This is the very reason why change is necessary to provide better working conditions and content, as Mulligan explained.

Fans compare the CGI to Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Ever since James Gunn and Peter Safran had taken over the leadership roles, the DC universe had seen a clear shift in the vision from the earlier iconic Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Now with the backlash over the CGI used in The Flash, fans can’t help but compare the two. A re-edited, much better-looking shot featuring Superman circulated on Twitter which has clearly made fans furious.

How is this repurposed/re-edited shot better than a $200M+ movie?

It’s the same VFX team ffs. It’s a vast difference 🤯

We were robbed.

We should riot in the streets until we get our DC universe back

In concept:DC > Marvel

In Implementation:Marvel > DC

After hearing what the VFX artist Mulligan had to say about the current state of the work environment, one can only hope things get better. DC superheroes deserve their story to be told in the most magical way possible and in order to do that, things have to be changed.
