The expectations for James Gunn’s Creature Commandos series are getting high as one of the lead stars teases the DC Universe animated show. While DC Studios’ new interconnected franchise still has several projects in the works, the DC Universe is closer than some people think, thanks to Creature Commandos. Set to be the first animated series tied to the new DC Universe, Creature Commandos is right now targeting a 2024 premiere date on Max, with Gunn having written all the episodes.

While Creature Commandos plot details are still being kept under wraps, one of the main actors for the Max animated series stresses that this is some of Gunn’s best work yet. In an interview with Collider, which was conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began, David Harbor, who will be voicing Eric Frankenstein, spoke about joining the DC franchise, as he is no stranger to the comic book genre. For Harbor, he spoke heavily about how Frankenstein is “a very colorful, terrific character,” while also teasing what Gunn’s Creature Commandos has coming up for viewers, sharing the following:

We recorded a bunch of stuff. I mean, not only do I get to play in the DC Universe, I get to play in the James Gunn DC Universe, which is a whole new exciting thing. I didn’t know what it was when it was sent to me; I met with James, and he sort of laid out a lot of stuff. It’s really exciting. He considers it some of the best stuff he’s ever written. It’s hilarious, and the character is great. I think it’s been announced that it’s Frankenstein, and it’s a very colorful, terrific character. So, yeah, we’ve started to shoot stuff. I’m not one to really break, but during this, it is wildly funny stuff. So, yeah, we’re shooting. It’s hilarious and I can’t wait for people to see it.

Why Creature Commandos Is The First DCU TV Show

With major Max shows for the DC Universe in the works, including Lanterns and Paradise Lost, some may wonder why Creature Commandos will be the first one to arrive in 2024. To begin with, this was seemingly a project that Gunn was already working on prior to his DC Studios co-CEO gig being announced back in late 2022. Creature Commandos, which will consist of seven episodes in season 1, is also being tackled through animation, which is rare in superhero shared universes so far.

But looking a bit deeper at the placement of Creature Commandos in DC Studios’ Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters” slate, this is right within Gunn’s wheelhouse. The prolific MCU and DC filmmaker has shown throughout his work that he loves to explore more obscure characters in the comic canon, especially those who fall into the category of being underdogs. Creature Commandos is similar to Gunn taking on Guardians of the Galaxy as well as very minor characters, including Peacemaker, when he tackled The Suicide Squad.

Since Creature Commandos has already been in production for quite a while, including all the voice actors recording their dialogue, time will tell when the show will actually premiere in 2024. Given that this will be a significant installment for the DC Universe, a premiere date may not be announced until the ongoing Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes come to an end. But based on Harbor’s excitement alone, it will be intriguing to see what Gunn has cooked up with Creature Commandos.
