James Gunn Reveals DC Universe Project That Isn’t Impacted By Strikes, Teases Surprises

Despite the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, James Gunn confirms that work continues on the DC Universe’s first project.

SUMMARY

  •  Creature Commandos, the first official project in James Gunn’s DC Universe, will not be delayed by the Hollywood strikes as it is an animated series.
  •  Gunn has already finished writing the scripts for Creature Commandos’ seven episodes.
  •  Creature Commandos is set in the “modern day” and is expected to have a different tone than what fans may expect.

Creature Commandos, the DC Universe’s first official project, is not going to be delayed by the Hollywood strikes, according to James Gunn. As the creative chief of the upcoming DC Universe, Gunn is working on the next decade of the announced DC movie and TV slate, but the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes have impacted most upcoming DCU projects. However, the first official project in Gunn’s DCU — Creature Commandos — has just received some good news.

On Instagram, Gunn was asked by a fan about when the DC Studios co-CEO would reveal more news about Creature Commandos.

Gunn then answered by mentioning that as Creature Commandos is an animated series, it is unaffected by the ongoing Hollywood strikes, and thus, work continues as usual on the DC Universe’s first official project. Gunn also teased what fans’ reactions to the upcoming animated series might be, saying, “I think it’s going to be so different than what fans expect.”

What We Know About Creature Commandos

The January slate reveal of the first projects in the DC Universe’s Chapter One — “Gods and Monsters” — brought along the announcement that Gunn will be playing to one of DC’s biggest strengths over the years — animation. DC has released many successful animated movies and series, which have thrived even when the DCEU faltered, making the medium a great weapon for the DCU. Creature Commandos is the DC Universe’s first animated series, with seven episodes all written by Gunn, who has already delivered the scripts.

Creature Commandos‘ cast includes Sean Gunn as Weasel and G.I. Robot, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, and Steve Agee as John Economos. Viola Davis will also reprise her DCEU role as Amanda Waller in Creature Commandos before leading her own DC Universe series — Waller — on Max.

Gunn’s recent DC Universe timeline update confirmed that Creature Commandos comes before Superman: Legacy, with the animated series aiming for a 2024 release while the Superman reboot movie arrives in theaters on July 11, 2025. While there are not many details available about Creature Commandos‘ story, Gunn has let it slip that the animated series is set in the “modern day.” With work stopped on most other DC Universe projects due to the Hollywood strikes, it is possible that fans will soon be getting more Creature Commandos updates from Gunn to make up for it.
