Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is delighted with Raheem Sterling following his performance in the Blues’ 4-1 win against Burnley at Turf Moor earlier today.
Raheem Sterling was involved in three of the goals Chelsea scored, grabbing their third of the game, and Mauricio Pochettino was quick to praise him when speaking to the BBC.
It was the winger’s third of the season after his brace versus Luton Town in August.
Pochettino’s side have now won back-to-back games in the top flight for the first time this term.
Mauricio Pochettino very pleased with Raheem Sterling
Speaking about Sterling’s display after the match, Pochettino said: “I am so pleased because I think he needs to feel the net and he is a player with experience that can provide a very good thing for the team.
“He created a penalty and then he scored and he was involved for the first goal, the own goal. He’s an experienced player and he needs to provide many things to the team.”
Message to Gareth Southgate
Sterling was not picked for the latest England squad and also missed out on the last one.
However, his performance against Burnley was a reminder to Southgate of what he can do.
If the Three Lions struggle during this international break, you suspect many will be questioning Southgate’s decision not to recall the 28-year-old, who cost Chelsea £50m when he signed from Manchester City in 2022.
Sterling was not in the best of form before the Burnley win. He had not scored since the victory over Luton.
But he looked sharp today and if he can keep playing at this level, then he has a great chance of winning an England recall.
At least Chelsea will not have to worry about their wide man picking up an injury ahead of a huge game against Arsenal when the Premier League resumes after this latest round of international fixtures.
