“That doesn’t seem appropriate,” Lindsay Lohan, star of Mean Girls, first rejected Anne Hathaway’s contentious 2005 film.

Lindsay Lohan turned down the role of Emily as she felt the film’s content was inappropriate for her.

It is always disheartening to see how actors face the wrath of media and audiences while becoming the target of backlash because of their projects. Something similar happened to Anne Hathaway after her 2005 movie Havoc. The controversial movie turned into a subject of humiliation following its release.

But surprisingly, Anne Hathaway’s film was subjected to criticism and rejection way before it was even made. Apparently, several actors like Lindsay Lohan, Mandy Moore, and Kate Bosworth felt uncomfortable with the subject of the movie and thus refused to appear in it.

Lindsay Lohan And Other Actors Turned Down Havoc

Anne Hathaway is often known for skimming through projects before choosing a particular one, that will help boost her career. However, surprisingly, the actress once chose Barbara Kopple’s 2005 crime drama, which ended up facing severe backlash and became a controversial film.

Lindsay Lohan turned down the role of Emily in Havoc

It seems Anne Hathaway didn’t see through the movie in a way that other actors like Lindsay Lohan, Mandy Moore, and Kate Bosworth did. According to IMDb trivia, the Mean Girls star Lohan was offered the role of Emily but she simply refused it, and thus the role went to Bijou Phillips.

I got this one script where this girl wants to join a Latino gang and she gets r*ped. I can’t be doing that right now. I don’t think that’s appropriate.”

Mandy Moore felt uncomfortable with the subject matter of Havoc

Similarly, just like Lindsay Lohan, even Mandy Moore and Kate Bosworth were offered the role of Allison. But unfortunately, both actresses turned it down, and the role got passed on to Anne Hathaway. Apparently, Moore and Bosworth left the project because they felt uncomfortable with the film’s subject matter and nudity.

Anne Hathaway’s 2005 Film Ended Up Facing Backlash

Showcasing the lifestyle of wealthy Los Angeles teenagers who were exposed to hip-hop culture and were inspired to imitate the gangster lifestyle and engage in slum tourism, Havoc dealt with super controversial elements. Portraying the trouble that the teenagers run into when they encounter a gang of drug dealers, the movie brings out real-life issues without a filter.

Havoc (2005)

Thereafter, the way the movie portrayed the reality of teenagers who get naively inspired by certain lifestyles and end up facing troubles while trying to imitate them, the film turned into a subject of controversy. Further, as Havoc featured Anne Hathaway‘s first ever n*de scenes, and showed scenes of brutality and r*pe, the film faced severe backlash from audiences.

Hathaway in Havoc as Allison Lang

Certainly, unlike Anne Hathaway’s other projects that turned into cult classics, Havoc failed to even grab its position at the box office. However, no matter how the movie ended up being, the actress showed how committed she was to edgy and potentially upsetting material. Instead of turning down the project unlike other actors, Hathaway took it as a challenge.
