Edgy. Cool. Comfortable? We wouldn’t have thought leather pants could be all three — but Heidi Klum and Anne Hathaway just proved us completely wrong.

While some may look at leather pants and think of nothing but Ross Geller’s infamous moment on Friends, they’re actually a trendy closet staple during the cooler months. Hathaway chose a more moto-inspired form of leather pants in New York, wearing high-waisted trousers with angled zip pockets and quilted details and a striped button-down shirt. She finished the look with vibrant accessories, including an on-trend heart-shaped purse and patent leather slingback heels.

In both cases, Klum and Hathaway proved that leather pants can actually be comfortable, thanks to their swingy, wide-leg silhouette and higher waistband. And they’re not alone — Hilary Duff, Michelle Obama, and Olivia Wilde have all rocked wide-leg leather pants, too. The wider leg makes these leather pants equal parts rebellious and refined, and they can be dressed up or down and worn from day to night.
