‘It’s irrelevant’: Wallabies out to avoid complacency ahead of danger Wales game

Wallabies scrum half Tate McDermott understands the importance of backing up last week’s win as they turn their focus to a hurt Welsh outfit.

The Australians were the talk of World Rugby after their last minute heroics against England, their first win at Twickenham since 2015.

However, McDermott and the Wallabies are spurred on by their Argentina swing and avoiding a similar fate, with their last-minute win followed by one of the largest defeats in their history.

“The group in general has a feeling that repeatability is the biggest thing for us to move forward,” the Reds star said.

“We’ve had a couple of good wins this year but flashback to Argentina where we knocked them off in the first game, a week later, we’re a completely different team.

“For us, it’s about making sure that everything we do this week, we don’t waste any time improving because repeatability and also backing up the performance against the English is crucial for us. We know that we conceded far too many points and quite often in test matches, if you concede 37 points, you don’t win the game.

“We understand that as a team, our success is measured by what we do throughout the week…Every week from now on is another new challenge.

“It’s a fresh page and last week against the English whilst it was a great moment, it’s irrelevant because we’ve got a fierce Welsh team in our face and we’ve got to make sure we’re ready for them.”

The Wallabies are well aware of Wales’ current situation after a winless 2024

Warren Gatland’s are coming off a surprise defeat to Fiji, leaving them at their worst World Ranking and Gatland forced to answer his critics.

“You’re always wary of the Welsh side because what you know is they’ll bring regardless of how they’re going is an incredibly strong set piece and a good defensive pressure game. That’s two things that they brought against us in our Sydney and Melbourne Tests earlier in the year.,” McDermott said.

“There was a couple of late tries in both those games that got us the victories but what we know is particularly over here at the Millennium Stadium, it’s going to be a fierce battle.

“They’re obviously hurting and we’ve done the analysis on the team that they’ve just announced and we’re looking forward to the challenge ahead.”
