“I have a competitive side” – When Tiger Woods opened up on playing golf “selfishly”

Tiger Woods has etched a unique legacy in the golf world. He is one of the most successful golfers in the world, with 15 Major titles. The American golfer was a former 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 prodigy and has been playing the game since the age of two.

In an interview with Reuters in December 2007, Woods opened up about his competitive side of the game. Speaking of his love for golf, Woods said (via Times of Malta),

“Golf is something I do selfishly for myself. I have a competitive side and that’s how I express it. But, as far as my tombstone is concerned, hopefully it will read something more of what I am trying to do for kids. That would be so much more ultimate than winning any golf tournament.

“The joy I get from winning a major championship doesn’t even compare to the feeling I get when a kid writes a letter saying: ‘Thank you so much. You have changed my life’.”

Having turned pro in 1996, Woods went on to win the maiden Major of his career the next year at the Masters. He has won five Masters, four PGA Championships, three U.S. Opens, and three Open Championships in his career so far.

However, over the last year or so, the legendary American golfer has been struggling with his game. His injuries and surgeries over the years have affected his play, and he has also limited his outings on the greens. In 2024, Woods competed in five tournaments but could only make one cut, which was at the Masters, where he finished in 60th place.
