Ireland great believes ‘phenomenal’ Jacques Nienaber would enter the ‘conversation’ as Andy Farrell’s successor

Ronan O’Gara will go up against Jacques Nienaber this weekend when La Rochelle host Leinster, but they could also do battle further down the line when the Ireland head coach role opens up.

That is according to Irish great Alan Quinlan, who discussed the relative merits of the two outstanding coaches on Off The Ball.

Both are on long-term deals at their respective sides, with Nienaber remaining at the Dubliners until 2026 and O’Gara’s contract at La Rochelle ending in 2027.

Length of Farrell’s contract

Following the 2023 Rugby World Cup, current Ireland boss Andy Farrell extended his deal with the Irish Rugby Football Union until the end of the next global tournament in Australia.

The timing therefore seems apt to set up a duel between the two should Farrell step aside following the 2027 World Cup.

Nienaber was part of two World Cup-winning campaigns with the Springboks and was the head coach during their most recent triumph in France.

Quinlan was asked by the presenter whether the 52-year-old would come into contention for the top Ireland role and the ex-Munster flanker responded: “Yeah, why not.

“Obviously, his track record and what he’s done with South Africa has been phenomenal.

“He will be judged this year on Leinster won’t he and how they do in Europe.

“I’m sure if he was available, if Andy Farrell was to step down or move aside, or there was a change of head coach, of course he would come into the conversation.”

There is a stumbling block, however, given Nienaber’s attachment to South Africa and the fact that he appeared reluctant to return to international rugby when asked in October.

The former Springboks head coach later clarified those comments, stating his opinion could well change later down the line.

O’Gara’s chances

Nienaber’s current stance is in contrast to O’Gara, though, who has expressed a desire to become an international coach, stating a preference for either “Ireland, France or England.”

The 47-year-old has done an outstanding job at La Rochelle, guiding them to the Champions Cup title in 2022 and 2023, and it appears inevitable that he will take a Test job at some point over the next few years.

“Of course he’s a candidate, and I think that’s ultimately where Ronan will end up,” Quinlan said.

“I think he’s contracted till 2027 with La Rochelle, but he’s spoken of his desire to be at international level.

“I always remember Clive Woodward many years ago saying that for any coach at any club, if you get an opportunity in international rugby, that’s where you have to aspire to be.”
