The Turning Torso Building in Switzerland
Located in the Swedish city of Malmo on the Öresund Strait, Turning Torso was designed by talented architect Santiago Calatrava with a unique twist design and pure white as morning dew.
Turning Torso stands out with a height of 190m including 54 floors divided into 9 blocks, each block has 5 floors stacked on top of each other. The unique point is that, each block has the same size, and when assembled they are rotated clockwise. Each floor rotates an angle of 1.6 degrees. When reaching the top of the tower, the total building has rotated 90 degrees from the ground. With this special design, the appearance of Turning Torso makes people think of an amazing and very lively “twist”.
The main bearing for the building is located in the hard core located in the center of the building and separated from each block, there are 2 tapered upper and lower floor slabs firmly attached to the hard core. The hard core has a radius of 5.3m, a thickness of 2.5m and thins with height. Up to the top floor, it was only 0.5m thick. In addition, Turning Torso is also designed with an external bearing system including diagonal and vertical steel braces, both bearing the force and shaping the architecture to rotate according to the building.
The whole building is equipped with soundproof, heat-insulated and good-strength glass system, fire alarm system, smoke alarm and sprinkler distributed everywhere. The upper and lower floors of each building use a special fireproof material to prevent the fire from spreading to the neighboring buildings and can control the fire within two hours. Vertical traffic consists of elevators and stairs located in the hard core of the building.
