Carson Daly has a special guest caddying for him as he plays in a celebrity golf tournament this week: his 15-year-old son Jackson!

Ahead of the American Century Championship presented by American Century Investments kicking off in Lake Tahoe on Friday, July 12, the Today host, 51, hit the course on Wednesday for practice with some support from his son, whom he also had caddy for him at a recent PGA Pro-Am in Connecticut.

“I wasn’t sure if he could walk all 18 holes holding my bag, but he did,” Daly tells PEOPLE on the course. “And he didn’t look at Instagram or TikTok once, which is amazing. So it’s great. This is a good bonding time for us.”

A big golf fan, Jackson got to sit down recently with Tiger Woods for a May episode of NBC’s Nightly News: Kids Edition. “It was ridiculous,” Daly says. “I interviewed Tiger live on the air, and Jackson got him before that for Nightly News Kids. I mean, it was early in the morning, he was asleep in the car on the way to The Today Show, but he rallied and he wrote his own questions, and he had a great sit down with him.”

Daly says the weekend after the interview, he and Jackson got to see Woods, 48, again in Las Vegas.

“I was hosting a thing for him, and he saw Jackson, and he just looked at Jackson and went, ‘Oh, you got your haircut, huh?’ ” Daly says. “Jackson’s like, ‘Hey, Daddy, he knows me. He noticed I got my haircut.’ So they’re like best friends now.”

In the future, Daly says it’d “be nice” to have a father-son golf outing with Woods and his 15-year-old son Charlie.

In addition to Today, Daly remains the long-running host of The Voice, which original coach Adam Levine will be returning to for season 27 in 2025 after some time off.

“We’re excited,” Daly says. “Listen, I’ll be totally honest with you. I’ve always loved Adam as a coach because he’s brutally honest. A show like this, not everything can be rainbows and pillow fights.”

Still, Daly makes clear “we’re not here to tell anybody they suck.”

“That’s why The Voice came on, and we’re coaches, not judges,” he says. “We know that when artists come on, if they do not get a chair to turn, they at least want to leave with constructive criticism. They want to know how to get better. And Adam is the master at that. So I’m excited to have him back, for that and personal reasons, of course.”

Until then, Daly is focused on playing in the American Century Championship presented by American Century Investments running through Sunday, July 14. Nicknamed the Super Bowl of celebrity golf tournaments, the event has raised millions of dollars over the years for the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, as well as local charities.
